Roberta Heiman addresses Rotary stating, “Bigger Jails Are Not What We Need”

Since 1913 the Rotary Club of Evansville has gathered to discuss current topics. Roberta Heiman addressed the club on Tuesday, August 27th, stating that “Bigger Jails are not what we Need. As reported by Penal Reform International, ” Overcrowding is a consequence of criminal justice policy, not of rising crime rates.” Mrs. Heiman stated that research shows that crime is not souring in Vanderburgh County; but more people are being jailed. The number of inmates in our jail is up 63% since 1999. Jails can no longer be just a place for detention, but rather a place to treat and manage mental health issues.
