DIRECTORY INFORMATION Cathy Sickman Renner has accepted a new position with the University of Evansville. Cathy is the Assistant Director to Gift Planning and Capital Support. Congratulations Cathy. WHERE DID THAT COME FROM? Spick and span, meaning spotlessly clean, was originally expressed as “spick and span new.” In the 16th century, the phrase referred to new ships. “Spick” meant spike or nail; “span” came from an old Norse word “spannry,” meaning “fresh wood chip.” Because every nail and piece of wood in a new ship was new, it was deemed “spick and span new.” On cloud nine, meaning deliriously happy, is thought to come from the U.S. Weather Service in the 1930s, when meteorologists numbered the different types of clouds. “Cloud nine” referred to cumulonimbus clouds, the highest – flying clouds. Thus, it’s an apt metaphor for being on top of the world. Clothes horse, or someone

THANK YOU Marianne Cox for the informative October programs. CONDOLANCES Sincere sympathy is extended to Barbara and Brian Williams on the death of her mother Mary Catherine Coyle on October 21, in Bradenton, Florida. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rotary Foundation of Evansville. CONGRATULATIONS Joe Kiefer and Mark Schweickart were sitting in the lucky seats when Rotary’s guest speaker Sean Ferguson of Eastland Mall asked everyone to rise and turn their chair over to look for the winning letter affixed to the chair bottom. Joe and Mark each received a $50 Simon Mall gift card. Congratulations. AMBASSADOR PROGRAM The Ambassador School Program will have its kick-off breakfast on November 14 at 7:00 AM at Kirby’s. Several ambassadors are still needed for the 2007-2008 school year. The time commitment and activity level are determined between the Rotarian ambassador and the school principal. If you would like to be a Rotary Ambassador, please contact Abbey Foroughi or Steve Groves. WHERE DID THAT COME FROM? who lives to wear new clothes, comes from the late 19th century term for a wooden rack used to dry or air clothes. Foot the bill, meaning to settle or pay up, dates back to the 15th century when people would tally a bill and set the total at the “foot,” or bottom, of the bill. Over time, this was referred to as “footing the bill” and eventually came to mean paying it. Polka dot, the patterned fabric or design, got its start in the mid-1800s when polka dancing was all the rage in Europe and America. The polka dot came from marketing ploy to capitalize on the dance craze. Manufacturers came up with polka hats, polka dresses, polka ties, but in the end, only the polka dot stuck.
