Judy Witt is District 6580 Governor. Rotary District 6580 includes 34 clubs located in south-central and southern Indiana and has a long history of strong community and international service. Five Rotarians from Evansville have served as District Governor: Under District 20, it was Frank H. Hatfield in 1922-1923; under District 156, it was Paul D. Crimm in 1938-1939; under District 658, it was Frank Kleiderer in 1959-1960 and Hermann Stephens in 1988-1989; and under District 6580, it was Terry W. Talley in 1994-1995. Paul D. Crimm’s son, Paul D. Crimm, Jr. and Terry Talley have both served as our Club Presidents and are still active members of our Club.

READING ROTARIANS

The week of October 8-12 will be the next week for “Reading Rotarians,” the program in which Rotarians read to first graders in the elementary schools. Ann Ennis will have sign up sheets available as soon as the times are set with the schools.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS

If you are a new Rotary member or a seasoned member and would like to serve on one of the numerous Rotary Committees, please contact the Chair of the Committee you are interested in. The Marketing Committee (Tess Grimm – 426-1871) and the Speaker’s Bureau (David Henze – 473-7200) are on the look out for a few great men and women.

RIDDLES

From Gene Warren: 1. Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday? 2. I can sizzle like bacon. I am made with an egg. I have plenty of backbone, but lack a good leg. I peel layers like an onion, but still remain whole. I can be long like a flagpole, yet fit in a hole. What am I?  3. What fails but never breaks: What breaks but never fails: 4. Part carbon, part water I am poison to the fishes. Many falsely claim my name. I am the pause that refreshes. What am I? 5. Many things can create one. It can be any shape or size. It is made for various reasons, and it can grow and shrink with time. What is it? 6. When is a door not a door? (Answers: 1. Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow; 2. A snake; 3. Night and Day; 4. Soda; 5.A hole; 6. When it’s ajar.

BEN FRANKLIN ON DECISION MAKING

From The Writing of Benjamin Franklin, edited by Albert Henry Smith, courtesy of Gene Warren. “When Ben Franklin had a decision to make, he used the following method: My way is to divide half a sheet of paper by a line into two columns; writing the one Pro, and over the other Con. Then during three or four day’s consideration, I put down under the different heads short hints of the different motives, that at different times occur to me, for or against the measure. When I have thus got them all together in one view, I endeavor to estimate their respective weights; and where I find two, one on each side that seem equal, I strike them both out. If I find a reason pro equal to some two reasons con, I strike out the three. If I judge some two reasons con, to some three reasons pro, I strike out the five; and thus proceeding I find at length where the balance lies; and if after a day or two of further consideration, nothing new that is of importance occurs on either side, I come to a determination accordingly. And, though the weight of reason cannot be taken with the precision of algebraic quantities, yet, when each is thus considered, separately and comparatively, and the whole lies before me, I think I can judge better, and am less liable to make a rash step; and in fact I have found great advantage from this kind of equation, in what may be called coral or prudential algebra.”
