CONGRATULATIONS Rotarian and UE President Stephen Jennings and his wife, Sally, were named Samuel Orr Honorary Alumni Award recipients for ongoing dedication and contributions to UE and to Evansville. Ruthie Shekell was elected to the University of Evansville Central Division Board of Directors. And, Stephen Jennings, Marge Soyugenc, and Bill Wooten were identified among the “people to know” in the community. THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS Please continue to keep all Rotarians and their families in your thoughts and prayers especially Roxie Baas, Carl Becker. Welcome back Ed Small. DISTRICT CONFERENCE The combined district conference for District 6560 and 6580 is April 20 through April 22 at the newly restored French Lick Hotel and Conference Center. Reservations should be made directly with the French Lick Springs Resort at 1-866-379-2202 or www.frenchlick.com The special Rotary rate is $90/night. Our Club will pay $50 toward the registration fee. Flyers with additional information are available at the sign in tables. HEALTH AT YOUR FINGERTIPS From Gene Warren: Next time you curl up with a good book, consider strapping on a helmet or some body armor. The research is in: Reading is high – risk behavior. According to Laura Lee’s book 100 Most Dangerous Things in Everyday Life and What You Can Do About Them, books cause more injuries in the United Kingdom per year (2707) than training weights (1884) or trampolines (1902). In the United States, an average of 10,683 citizens suffer calamitous encounters with “books, magazines, albums or scrapbooks” annually, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Surveillance System. We’re not just talking about common injuries, either, such as broken toes from dropped books and strained backs from shelving. In Colombia, a previously unknown allergen was discovered in book dust – and in the lungs of local librarians. And British researchers say that fungi lurking inside some old books can, when inhaled, cause dangerous hallucinations. Magazine racks and bookends send an additional 1490 people to the emergency room. Reading in bed exposes you to the added dangers associated with beds, mattresses and pillows – 411,689 U.S. casualties per year. And forget seeking sanctuary in your favorite chair. You’re more than 13 times as likely to get hurt while sitting down as when operating a chain saw. – from Writer’s Digest.

CONDOLANCES Sincerest sympathy is extended to Conrad and Lesa Cagle on the February 16th death of Conrad’s mother Iris L. Cagle. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rotary Foundation of Evansville. WELCOME Doug Wink, introduced Cathy Eichele, Tri-State Better Business Bureau, Inc., as a new Rotary member. Cathy’s classification is Business Organization - Development. Say hello and welcome Cathy back into your Rotary Club. GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE Host families are still needed. The GSE team from Tochigi City, Japan, Evansville’s sister city, will arrive from Corydon, IN on Thursday, April 5, 2007. They will attend the Warrick meeting that Thursday. Team members will attend our Rotary Club meeting on Tuesday, April 10, then depart for Terre Haute. During their time in Evansville, team members will be attending cultural events and visiting local businesses. Host families are needed for the members of the team from April 5 through 9. Contact Mark E. Miller, mmiller@indidanlawonline.com, or 425-1490 if you would like to be a host family or provide transportation for the team. ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE A host family is needed! From Andrew Alexander: “We will have an opportunity for a local family to host our inbound exchange student Lubo, in mid-February. Lubo currently lives in Newburgh with Rotarian Roxie Baas and her husband Scott. Lubo attends the Signature School and rides to and from school with fellow students. Lubo is from Slovakia and has a good command of English. He is much like a typical teenager and had made numerous friends through school. As mentioned at our Tuesday meeting, we will help arrange transportation to and from school for Lubo as this is often a prospective family’s primary concern. Consider discussing this unique opportunity to spend several months as an ambassador for our Club and our country with your spouse, family, good friends or neighbors. Keep in mind our host family does not have to be a Rotarian. Please contact Steve Groves, 434-4880 or steve@01inc.com or Andrew Alexander, 476-1456, or Andrew.alexander@sci-us.com to express your interest.”
